Self-regard is not a quality generally in short supply in the world of Westminster politicians.
Yet Keith Vaz's ego has the capacity to take even many of his Labour colleagues by surprise.
He once described himself as 'a leading member, if not the leading member, of the Asian community in this country'.

Over the last 20 years, he has veered from one extreme of his party to the other - moving from the hard-left Campaign Group of MPs to become one of Tony Blair's most unctuous New Labour supporters.

Two years after being elected in Leicester East in 1987, he marched publicly with Muslim constituents who wanted Salman Rushdie's head over his Satanic Verses book.
It later emerged that at the same time, he was telephoning the author to offer his private support.
Once an arch Eurosceptic, he became such a strong pro-European that as Europe Minister, he threatened to hound Eurosceptics out of the Labour Party.
In one leaked piece of correspondence, he was said to have written: 'We know who you Eurosceptics are and we're coming to get you in your constituencies.'
Born in 1956 in Aden, he is a Goanese Catholic christened Nigel Keith Anthony Standish Vaz. His father was the correspondent in Aden for the Times of India.

Academically brilliant, he want from Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, West London, to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he dropped the Nigel.
His contemporaries there included Mr Blair's chief spin doctor Alastair Campbell, the novelist and Labour supporter Robert Harris and the BBC presenter Andrew Marr.
A solicitor turned barrister, his family's involvement in politics always made it likely he would seek to follow the same route.
His mother, Merlyn, who died in 2003, was a long-serving Labour councillor in Leicester.
An early attempt at entering Parliament as Labour's candidate in Richmond and Barnes ended in failure, as did a bid to become Euro MP for Surrey West the following year.
He was selected as Labour's candidate in Leicester East for the 1987 election - possibly in part thanks to his outspoken support for hugely controversial 'black sections' in the Labour Party.
These were to be clubs closed to white party members and were designed to draw in disaffected ethnic minorities to Labour.

Mr Vaz's stance is thought to have helped win him support in Leicester East, a constituency with 16,000 minority workers.
He went on to defeat the sitting Tory MP Peter Bruinvels, a prominent supporter of capital punishment who once offered to act as a public hangman.
But Mr Vaz's supporters may have been disappointed when, on entering Parliament, he reversed his support for 'black sections'.
He prompted outrage in 1990 when he suggested an IRA bomb in Leicester might for some reason have been planted by the Army.
Despite the row, he joined Labour's front bench as a junior environment spokesman in opposition in 1992.
But it was his role as a Parliamentary bag carrier to Derry Irvine, a close friend of Tony Blair, that helped propel him to the political frontline.
Lord irvine, the then Lord Chancellor, described him as 'the most incredible networker I have ever met'.
Appointed Europe Minister in 1999, allegations of sleaze and chicanery began to emerge soon afterwards.
The next year, the Parliamentary standards watchdog was called in to investigate allegations of undisclosed payments to Mr Vaz from businessmen in his constituency.
He was cleared of nine of the 28 allegations of financial wrongdoing-accused of blocking investigation-into 18 and censured for one - failure to register payments of £4,500 from a solicitor he went on to recommend for a peerage.
After collapsing during a TV interview he was dropped by Mr Blair from the Government in 2001.
Ill health was officially the reason given, though Mr Blair was said to believe that his continued presence in the Government was an embarrassment.
And in 2002, another inquiry into whether a company connected to Mr Vaz had taken money from the billionaire Indian Hinduja brothers came to a more damning verdict.
It concluded he had 'committed serious breaches of the code of conduct and a contempt of the House' and recommended that he be suspended from the Commons for a month.
Yet even this humiliation was not enough to keep Mr Vaz down. After the 2005 General election he slowly worked his way back - being appointed head of an ethnic minority task force by Mr Blair in 2006.
Controversially, he won the prestigious chairmanship of the home affairs select committee in 2007, replacing the universally respected John Denham.
He was effectively shoehorned into the post by the Government, which claimed there was not enough time to go through the usual procedure of asking a crossparty group of MPs to come up with a nominee.
Critics say he has used the post for grandstanding and showboating. Only this week, he was criticised by commentators for inviting Cherie Blair for a high-profile appearance before his committee to discuss policing and knife crime, despite her limited expertise on the subject.
Even before the latest controversy, MPs suspect that his ambitions still run deep. 'The rumour running around Labour MPs was that he would be offered a knighthood for his vote on 42 days,' said one MP who knows him.
'I think he wants to be a knight. He sees that it's unlikely he will ever be a minister again and he would like to be a peer of the realm.
Whether after yesterday's disclosure such a dream is possible now seems doubtful.
How the speaker cut off Cameron's attack
David Cameron
Speaker Michael Martin raised eyebrows in the Commons yesterday by abruptly calling time on David Cameron's attack on Gordon Brown.
He cut off the Prime Minister as he rose to answer the Tory leader over charges that he had not been straight with the voters.
Mr Cameron had scored a coup by confronting Mr Brown with the leaked letter from Geoff Hoon to Keith Vaz.
The Tory leader had just asked his third question and Mr Brown was rising to reply when the Speaker called 'order', apparently in reply to noise in the Chamber.
There was a moment of confusion as the Prime Minister sat down, then rose again to answer, at which point Mr Martin turned and called Labour MP Tom Levitt, who asked a question about the environment.
A spokesman for Mr Brown rejected suggestions that the Speaker had rescued the Prime Minister from Mr Cameron's attack. 'The Prime Minister just responded to the Speaker's instruction.'

There is, of course, a lot of hype suggesting that the ‘Houses DO hold the executive to account!
But that is a lie.
As even the formally placed ‘chair’ of the ‘Crossrail Bill Select Committee in the House of Lords’ [= our abbreviation of that is= CBSCHL= where the ‘S’ stands for STOOGED rather than “select’] has confessed: They are useless.
They are MEANT to be useless...
That ‘chair’ has said that objectors to Crossrail who are not impressed by the behaviour of the CBSCHL should seek redress in the courts!
Exactly the point that KHOODEELAAR! had been making and IS continuing to make!
The ‘Parliament’ is being discredited by the parliamentarians. And they know it.
And they say it.
As they said so many ways in the 30 minute stunt called the PMQs staged yesterday.

The Crossrail hole plot-INVITING corrupt clique controlling the East London Council of 'Tower Hamlets' is smashing the community in the area.....

We are daily showing, on the AADHIKARonline web pages, blogs and al,lied publications centring around the campaign against the London Crossrail hole plot just how alienated the controlling clique is from the community.
We are about to show that they are no longer just alienated. they are downright hostile.
They are hostile to the local community.
In this commentary, we show some of the current items of evidence that confirm that in betraying the community for the Big Business agenda of bankrupt economics identifiable with the corrupt City of London and whatever 'Canary Wharf' denotes, the controlling clique on Tower Hamlets Council has also committed a fundamental political self-destructive act...
One of the likely consequences of this will be seen between now and whenever the next elections take place for the Tower Hamlets Council...
How have they done so?
For a start, the numerical majority of the token, 'formal' decorations that are exhibited as being 'members' of the majority group on the Council are NOT in there making the decisions.
They are NOT even there to make any contributions. .
They are NOt capable of doing so.
This is not OPINION.
This is fact.
Secondly, those who do make the policy and then propel those through the formal 'members' are mostly NOT members.
They are NOT even employed, as such, in the Council. Or ‘by’ the Council.
Some of these are in fact agents of Big Business and their key role is to take over the agenda setting of the Council.
Thirdly, because the formal 'members' are NOt there to represent the community - they do not get to know the difference between representation and letting the constituency down.
Fourthly, we have a democratic vacuum. A deficit.
That void is being filled by the unaccountable, the unseen, the invisible elements that make the actual agenda, decide on what ‘needs to be done’ and what ‘needs to be avoided’.
A third component of their role is to also decide as to what ‘needs to be opposed’.
THEY have decided to apply the resources and the ‘powers’ of the Council in OPPOSING the people in the community. And in particular in opposing what is universally good, what is legitimate.
What is vital for the existence and the progress of the community. And the survival of the community.
This is the point at which the controlling clique decided to INVITE the Crossrail hole attacks upon the community.
Just like the decision to sabotage democracy by imposing an army of consultants who themselves form parts of the clique and aid and abet the clique in fomenting ever new sets and excuses for keeping the operation as corrupt and as unaccountable as they can manage to do --- the corrupt clique in control of Tower Hamlets Council has now ALMOST succeeded in making bit ‘the norm’ that the Council is a PRIVATE company unaccountable to the community.
This is why the clique has been so ferociously dishonest. There has been no .
It knows that ‘local ward councillors’ are not functioning as ward representatives
EVEN if, theoretically speaking, they WERE acting, for a length of a day, as ward councillors, they would not be able to sustain that intellectual position beyond a day. Why?
Because there is no constituency based, ward based political framework that is holding these ‘ward’ ‘councillors’ to account...

As London tribunal finds Tower Hamlets Council guilty, how many other cases DO exist of the Council's callousness?
CRASS act by Crossrail hole plot-inviting clique on Tower Hamlets Council, EXPOSED in a tribunal case verdict today...
The crassness of the controlling clique on Tower Hamlets Council is a theme that the Khoodeelaar! campaign against Crossrail hole plot has pointed out right from the start of our campaign in January 2004.
We have said that Tower Hamlets Council is controlled by a clique that is corrupt. That the Council has been in the corrupt clique's control for most of the time. That decisions made by the corrupt clique are by definition corrupt and or inappropriate and or wasteful;.
This we have said all along and despite the fact that the so-called ‘local’ newspaper, the East London IDIOTISER keeps claiming to be publishing accurate reports about the behaviour of the council when the truth is that the Idiotiser is suppressing the true behaviour of the clique. And of the totally plaint ‘opposition’.
The Conservatives are NOt being treated here as ‘Opposition’. More on the Tower Hamlets Council 'Conservatives' shortly.

Council worker in line for £1 million pay out in pension claim battle
A council worker made redundant six months before qualifying for a pension payout could receive £1 million compensation after victory at an employment tribunal today.
John Wooster, 50, from Chigwell, Essex, worked for Tower Hamlets council in east London for 33 years from the age of 16.
He was made redundant months before becoming eligible for a lump sum and pension payments.
Today Stratford Employment Tribunal found that he was unfairly dismissed and a victim of age discrimination.
Mr Wooster said: "This is a great victory. I really hope that this will stop the council from treating anyone else in the appalling way that it has treated me.
"I devoted 33 years of my working life to the council and it repaid me by dismissing me so that it would save money by not paying me my pension entitlements."
The council had claimed that Mr Wooster was a temporary employee while he worked as a senior consultation officer on secondment at East End Homes, a registered social landlord.
The firm offered to pay his salary until he reached the age of 50, but Tower Hamlets refused and he was dismissed on December 29 2006.
Solicitor Helen Murphie said: "Mr Wooster started work with the council when he was 16 and continued to work his way up the ladder until he was 49 and a half. Knowing that he would be entitled to his pension and a lump sum if he were made redundant upon reaching the age of 50, the council deliberately refused to redeploy him and dismissed him immediately."
Judge Pritchard-Witts said the tribunal had "no doubt" that it was Mr Wooster's age that had caused his dismissal.
Mr Wooster followed in the footsteps of his father, Tom, and grandfather, also John, in working for the council.
Wooster Gardens in Poplar, east London, are named after Mr Wooster's grandfather, who was once mayor of Poplar.
The 50-year-old is now claiming £1 million in compensation for loss of employment until his age of retirement at 65, loss of pension, and injury to feelings.
The amount he will be awarded will be decided at a later hearing.

Council worker in line for £1 million pay out in pension claim battle
A council worker made redundant six months before qualifying for a pension payout could receive £1 million compensation after victory at an employment tribunal today.
John Wooster, 50, from Chigwell, Essex, worked for Tower Hamlets council in east London for 33 years from the age of 16.
He was made redundant months before becoming eligible for a lump sum and pension payments.
Today Stratford Employment Tribunal found that he was unfairly dismissed and a victim of age discrimination.
Mr Wooster said: "This is a great victory. I really hope that this will stop the council from treating anyone else in the appalling way that it has treated me.
"I devoted 33 years of my working life to the council and it repaid me by dismissing me so that it would save money by not paying me my pension entitlements."
The council had claimed that Mr Wooster was a temporary employee while he worked as a senior consultation officer on secondment at East End Homes, a registered social landlord.
The firm offered to pay his salary until he reached the age of 50, but Tower Hamlets refused and he was dismissed on December 29 2006.
Solicitor Helen Murphie said: "Mr Wooster started work with the council when he was 16 and continued to work his way up the ladder until he was 49 and a half. Knowing that he would be entitled to his pension and a lump sum if he were made redundant upon reaching the age of 50, the council deliberately refused to redeploy him and dismissed him immediately."
Judge Pritchard-Witts said the tribunal had "no doubt" that it was Mr Wooster's age that had caused his dismissal.
Mr Wooster followed in the footsteps of his father, Tom, and grandfather, also John, in working for the council.
Wooster Gardens in Poplar, east London, are named after Mr Wooster's grandfather, who was once mayor of Poplar.
The 50-year-old is now claiming £1 million in compensation for loss of employment until his age of retirement at 65, loss of pension, and injury to feelings.
The amount he will be awarded will be decided at a later hearing.

As the House of Commons 'Select committee' on the 'Crossrail Bill' hears formal presentation of objections from several individuals and local groups in the Brick Lane and Whitechapel area in the Portcullis House, in Westminster, London SW1 starting at 1000 Hrs [0900 GMT] today [13 June 2006], the Khoodeelaar! Campaign is gearing up its pressure on the 'new' Tower Hamlets Council, which has been the single most culpable 'democratic entity' that has touted against the local community and has brought upon the East End the massive threat of the Crossrail attacks. The only democratic and constitutional defence of the community should have been a democratically elected body, the local council! Instead, it is the grassroots community based Khoodeelaar! On Monday 12 June 2006, Khoodeelaar! The Brick Land and Whitechapel London E1 Area campaign against the Crossrail hole Council delivered the first of a new series of Open Letters to Tower Hamlets councillors. They also included the texts of a draft motion for the full meeting of Tower Hamlets Council scheduled to be held on 21 June 2006.
The demand for Tower Hamlets Council to Say No to CrossRail is the continuation of the demand made by the Khoodeelaar! campaign meeting held on 22 January 2006 which was supported by more than 1000 people who turned up to back the campaign against the CrossRail attack on the Brick Lane London E1 area.
Today’s Khoodeelaar! Campaign activities also include the publication of the latest Khoodeelaar! exposé of the Crossrail-hole-plot backing controlling clique on Tower Hamlets Council – and an updated analysis of that clique’s lies for Crossrail as confirmed before the ‘select committee’ on the ‘Crossrail Bill’.
• The Khoodeelaar! Letter to Tower Hamlets Councillors being published today [Tuesday 13 June 2006] will include the following legal and constitutional points:-
• That Khoodeelaar! will take individual councillors to court – when the series of court actions is commenced as soon as possible after the conclusion of the current formal meetings of the ‘House of Commons Crossrail Bill select committee – and that the key ground against the particular councillors will be their roles in either misleading the community or making misleading communications or comments or statements to or about the community and for the CrossRail hole plan scheme project Bill
a. b. That Khoodeelaar! will support and where necessary initiate the full and comprehensive investigation of electoral fraud and offences that might have been committed at the 4 May 2006 elections.
The idea behind the Khoodeelaar! campaign has been a deeply moral and a highly constitutional one – to apply all the known and commonly perceived concepts of democratic representation by causing all holders of public office in the locality to acknowledge their duties in context and to actively engage in delivering the representation that they are in office to deliver.
In the campaign activities focussing on the Crossrail hole-inviting Tower Hamlets Council, we are today publishing details of the meeting of the Council ‘cabinet’ held on 6 October 2004.
That meeting was observed by over fifteen members of the various local groups opposed to the Crossrail hole plan. During that meeting, the then chair of Tower Hamlets Council’s regeneration committee or the ‘lead member’ for ‘regeneration’ made a number of statements that were described by the CBRUK Central Executive council as misleading.
CBRUK Central wrote to the Council’s chief executive Christine Gilbert putting on the record the organisation’s objections to the statements and role of Michael Keith. Christine Gilbert took her time ands did not reply until late in October 2004. When she did reply, she claimed that the interpretation by CBRUK Central of Michael Keith’s statement/s had been inaccurate.
She asserted that she knew because she was present at the meeting concerned and that she also had seen the minutes of the meeting. When Cbrukcentral asked Gilbert to let them have a copy of the alleged version of the alleged minutes, Gilbert failed to deliver. That failure was not exceptional.
Throughout her time in the post of chief executive – a post she occupied after being eased into it by Michael Keith who had played a decisive role in Gilbert’s appointment to the post for which a better candidate was rejected – Gilbert persistently defied the democratic requirements and let the community stay in the dark about all crucial decisions that he took for the controlling clique. Of all the damaging acts, her role in prompting the Crossrail hole attack on the East End has been the most far-reaching one confirming the Big Business and City of London agenda to uproot the community out of its home and to make the East End ready for takeover

I have just spoken again in the last five minutes to one of your RESPECT party members while walking down the Hanbury Street. He rushed off saying that he had another urgent matter to attend to. He said he was due to speak to you in a matter of minutes about the CrossRail Bill.
I had told him that Khoodeelaar! had waited for a long time to hear about what you as the local MP and as the RESPECT party were doing to support the campaign against Crossrail.
Over the past few months, in fact since I first met you as the local MP on 30 January 2006, we have heard so many claims about who was doing what 'in the community' about the Crossrail threat that it is time to put the very serious concerns caused by those false and misleading assertions in a new updated version of questions to you. I hope this will focus your attention at least on what we are interested in seeing you do as the local MP.
First of all I record, for the n'th time that I have heard you personally speak unequivocally against Crossrail and over the past 160 days I have chronicled your comments and role as accurately as any of your eols has ever been done by anyone other than by yourself.
As compared to your personal statements of opposition to Crossrail, there have been far too many statements and comments and claims made by persons that are either identifiable as members of your party or those who have made statements while uttering the words as spokespersons for your party.
ALL those statements have fallen short of what the Khoodeelaar! campaign has stood for against CrossRail.
ALL those statements and comments have been in conflict with the position as identifiable by reference to your statements on Crossrail
What is the reasons for this conflict?
If you disagree that there is and has been this conflict then please cite on which ones you are maintaining this stance and I shall be more than willing to provide you with chapter and verse showing how very wide the gulf has been between your stated position against Crossrail and the positions as stated by those speaking as your RESPECT party personnel.
I also recall that on 9 April 2006 you said that a special brochure against Crossrail had been produced and that it would be available in the community immediately.
I have asked for a copy of that and none has been either shown to me or referred top in any statements by anyone from your party to me in the last two months.
Please state what happened to that brochure and if it was shelved then why.
Now, what you need to realise as the local MP is that there is very serious anxiety about what exactly you are doing to defend the local community against the CrossRail programme.
Over the period since 17 January 2006 when I launched the very first public defence of you in the Brick Lane area as against the Blaring media blitz that was sweeping the country against you over your participation in the Channel 4 programme concerned, I have spoken to hundreds of people on the subject of your role in opposing CrossRail. In the past fortnight we in the Khoodeelaar! campaign organisation has had cause to go over every single political component that is relevant in the defence of the community against the corrupt Crossrail hole-backing Tower Hamlets Council. We also have noted the statement made in the name of your party on 2 June 2006 on the satellite TV station called Bangla TV That statement was the same statement in supporting Crossrail as had been the statements of Michael Keith, Helal Abbas, and the Tories and the Liberals.
So, here are the most pressing questions at the moment and on the subject of your role and your practical plans about identifying with the Khoodeelaar campaign against the Crossrail attack on the community.
1. Have you collected your thoughts on the matter as you prepare to address the select committee on Wednesday?
2. If you have, what are the key points you are going to make and what evidential basis?
3. Who apart from Khoodeelaar! would you say has been truthfully, consistently, significantly and emphatically active in a campaigning mode and with campaigning organisation against Crossrail? I ask this because I want to know whether it is apparent to you that a stooge outfit was underway at the behest of the corrupt elements in control of Tower Hamlets Council which was set up to sabotage our campaign of opposition to Crossrail
4. What progress if any have you made in getting across to the two satellite TV stations as to why their obstructions to anti-Crossrail campaigners and their promotions of and touting for pro-Crossrail council was wrong and that it was against the existing broadcasting regulation guidelines and codes/
5. What steps have you taken or prepared to take that you can actually back the objective of defusing the main arguments that the promoters of the plan have confected?
6. You stated on 7 March 2006 that you had not been able to speak on the matter as you were a petitioner.
7. Now that the petition is being formally introduced by you at the scheduled session tomorrow, what can you tell the community now that you will be saying tomorrow against Crossrail and in tangible and lasting solidarity with the community that faces the attacks under the CrossRail programme?

Poverty of the present Parliament in the UK is writ large and heard loud and clear in the bankrupt language of the alleged rebel MPs...
They do not have life in their words. It is as dead as John Redwood!
They are, democratically and metaphorically speaking, as dead as Redwood.
The UK Houses of Parliament are not serving democracy. They are not serving the people in the country. They are not doing the job that they are paid to do.. they are thus causing a multifarious disservice and doing damage that cannot be repaired...
Every time the parliamentarians are observed in 'action'. as they have been as they supplicated to Big Business agenda and Douglas Alexander-linked lobbyists for Bechtel USA, the poverty of the MPs became very clear... the Embarrassing ignorance, cowardice and amorality of the Peers became unmistakable....
Packed as they often are as stooges for the ruling cliques and for the dominating cabals that constitute the present [and the 'contemporary' British] Parliament, the ‘ordinary’ members in the House of Commons are as much hostages to the forces of institutionalised, legislative wrongdoing, greed and mass corruption as they are also personally pitiable and undeserving of any claim to legitimacy....

Other than to reinforce the view that he is a petty egotistic time-seving careerist obsessed with his own access to publicly paid for platform , power and cash....

Gordon Brown's competence as an economically able finance minister keeps being exposed as having been a myth! After the event. The exposure that is... Because when Brown was still in post at the UK Treasury, the suggestion was not effectively made.
But the Gordon Brown myth as a competent manager of the Uk economy was again brought to the for this week.
This happened on Wednesday this week when both the ‘main’ opposition parties’ raised questions about Gordon Brown during the 'presentation' made by the current fiancé Minster Alistair Darling in the UK House of Commons...
Both the Tory George Osborn and the Lib Democratic Vince Cable made the same point in essence. And as usual Vince Cable had an almost real point to make when he said that as finance minister it was Gordon Brown who got rid of thousands of staff in the Inland Revenue. the implication of Cable’s statement being that because of staff cuts there was the data security scandal that there was in the Inland Revenue...
