WHY NOTTINGHAM'S PARKING LEVY COULD GO NATIONWIDE
Be the first reader to comment on this story

National anti-road levy campaigner Peter Roberts, from Birmingham-based lobbying group Drivers' Alliance, explains why he fears Nottingham's planned Workplace Parking Levy could be rolled out across Britain

As the city of Nottingham stumbles towards a workplace parking levy, many people will say "it is a business tax so I am not affected".

This lack of personal involvement could be why the public backlash against the proposals has yet to match that seen in other cities proposing a congestion charge.

However, this new and untested tax adds cost to business and will significantly impact employers who are already struggling with the significant economic downturn.

The council argues all the money raised will go to improving public transport, but the benefits are mixed.

Better buses and trams are welcome but the proposed tram extension will only help a few people living nearby. For everyone else this is a tax on privately owned parking spaces.

The workplace parking levy will cause business leaders to look at their finances and trim costs as the money has to be found from somewhere. It is likely some will pass the parking charges to their employees; some will reduce their workforce and some will quit Nottingham altogether if this parking tax goes ahead.

Taxation has massively increased over the past ten years with huge rises in council tax, personal tax, motoring tax and stealthy taxes such as parking prices, flight taxes and insurance tax.

There has been a doubling in council tax since 1997, and the general tax burden has increased by 50%. What has happened to all this money, we should have plenty left for public transport improvements?

Motorists alone now contribute around £50bn a year in tax and less than £10 bn is spent on transport.

London has just been given £16bn to spend on crossrail, but Nottingham gets nothing unless businesses or their workers pay a tax for parking. The war against drivers continues and Nottingham is in the front line.

Congestion charges and road pricing have been defeated, but WPL will spread to other regions if Nottingham succeeds.

People power works and by telling your MPs and councillors you want the improvements but no new taxes forces them to look at cost savings instead of tax increases.

You can help by signing a petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/NottinghamWPL/

Road pricing was defeated when 1.8m signed last year. Please sign again and help stop the spread of new taxes targeting motorists.

Road cash streets ahead of rail
Helen Nugent
Investment in roads has soared in the past six years while resources for rail have scarcely changed, undermining ministers’ claims to be helping people to switch from cars to trains.

Figures seen by The Times show that spending on the road network has risen by more than 60 per cent since 2002 while money devoted to railways has increased by less than 10 per cent. The information, obtainedby the Liberal Democrats from parliamentary answers, comes after Network Rail said that passengers faced acute overcrowding on key train routes because capacity would be exhausted long before any new lines could be built. The Highways Agency has 36 large-scale road schemes under way, but with demand for rail travel booming, the only significant new rail line being planned for England is Crossrail.

Douglas McNeill, transport analyst at Blue Oar, a City stockbroking firm, said: “These figures illustrate the Government’s determination that railways should pay their way rather than depend on taxpayers’ money. That is hard to reconcile with the stated aim of encouraging travellers to switch from rail to road.”

Norman Baker, for the Lib Dems, said: “Unless we see a fundamental change in priorities, we will never escape dependence on oil and meet our climate change obligations.”

Something to do with the railways being private, more interested in keeping the shareholders happy than providing a good service.
This is why the rail network should be re-nationalised.

If the evidence supports your description of what has been happening to undermine "ministers’ claims to be helping people to switch from cars to trains" then that will not be the only aspect of the Department of Transport ministers' follies.Crossrail is a major flaw. Not justified by the transport needs or by the economics of the matter.

Saturday 5 July 2008:

KHOODEELAAR! is the campaign that came into existence on 31 January 2004 and has ever since advocated against the Big Business agenda attacks on the people, on the community, on the economy on the environment in the East End of London ... Khoodeelaar! has aimed to stop the Crossrail holes being dug in the East End of London... To date, a number of those holes plans have been dropped from the initial plot.. But a number still remain in the agenda...

The KHOODEELAAR! campaign is actively addressing, on a 24/7 basis, the remaining and the current Big Business agenda pretexts and collisions that are associated with the residual parts of the Big Business Crossrail-linked agenda; Khoodeelaar! is the daily monitor in and from the inner city east End of London of the parasitising of the UK parliament. and of the stooging of the UK Parliament

KHOODEELAAR! has been making accurate and comprehensively vindicated analytical warnings against the abuses of office by Gordon Brown and by the occupant in the name of the people of London of the post created by Tony Blair called the ‘Mayor’ in London....

KHOODEELAAR! published the ONLY and the accurate ADVICE to Boris Johnson on 10 months ago [that is TEN MONTHS before Boris Johnson was featured on the DAILY MAIL London over the RAY LEWIS ‘incidents’ [Thursday and Friday 3 and 4 July 2008 as shown on the front page of today's - saturday 5 July 2008 -’ DAILY MAIL howling , “BORIS: THE WHEELS ARE COMING OFF ALREADY “ Saturday 5 July 2008] that he [Boris Johnson, only just ‘rumoured as a candidate to be for the post of mayor in the name of London, ten months ago when we said this to him, that he must SHOW that he, Boris Johnson, was occupying a higher moral and ethical plane than Ken Livingstone ever did....Or any that Ken Livingstone EVER could or would...... It is obvious so far that Boris Johnson did not pay attention to what KHOODEELAAR! told him 10 months ago....

Khoodeelaar! is observing Boris Johnson this weekend and is again advising him to drop Crossrail so that he does not get completely derailed by the obscene wastefulness and irrelevance of Crossrail London.......

Khoodeelaar! is voicing the latest comprehensive form of the concern, the anxiety, the alarm against the behaviour of those who are ‘professionally’ paid in the name of the public but who are habitually letting the public down.... that the inner city East London borough of Tower Hamlets is the site for the most extensive variety of breaches of human rights, of democratic, ethical, accountability norms and requirements and expectations and that the KHOODEELAAR! campaign against Crossrail hole agenda is also the campaign for upholding those aspects of the values that are decent, that are universally desirable that are under attacks so negligently and callously and brazenly by all the agencies, and 'publicly paid for and public maintained' 'institutions' and timeserving careerists... on the local Council, on the regional London Assembly and in the UK Parliament.....

KHOODEELAAR! is the constitutional law campaign from the inner city East End of London borough of Tower Hamlets...

KHOODEELAAR! is the ethical, the moral, the social, the community pro-transparency, pro-environment, pro-democratic daily action AGAINST the Tower Hamlets Council’s controlling clique.... The Tower Hamlets Council controlling clique which has been involved in INVITING the Crossrail hole attacks on the East End of London... The Crossrail hole attacks are contained in the Crossrail hole agenda The Crossrail hole agenda is partly contained in the ‘Crossrail, Bill’ [still getting rubber-stamped in the UK Houses of Parasited, Stooged parliament] [that is acting, has been acting as an agent and a tout for Big Business and engaged in policies, promotions and projects against the ordinary people in and across the same borough....

Khoodeelaar! is acting in defence of the principle of democratic accountability by the ‘seekers and the holders for the time being of posts, positions and offices in the name of the people in the area and at the expense of the public’...
